How I Read Multiple Books at a Time

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

Friends, if we want to feel less lonely and more connected to God and His joy, we have His Word!

The Word was with God, and the Word was God. And when we read His word, we digest it like the sweetest (most nutritious) honey ever made. Not only does it transform our thoughts, but becomes a fire in our bones, compelling us to move with compassion!

The Word teaches me about God (and makes me become like Him) more than any other book, but He has used so many other books to shape me.

Like good friends, these books have influenced me for the better, and I hope they serve as gifts to reveal God even more clearly to you, too.

No Time To Read?

And if you’re saying, “I wish I had time to read…” and are more an audio book person but want to be a book person because reading is more intellecutally stimulating and personally empowering, maybe my book-in-every-room method can help*:

FOR THE KITCHEN

I like having a business book on the counter for when I have a few minutes to sit down with a hot drink. My current read is Start with Your People by @brianjdixon.

FOR THE CAR

I’m starting to carry books in the car for when I’m driving around for after school activities and baby falls asleep unexpectedly, or I have a few minutes in between appointments and such. I plan to carry parenting books for the car, like Give Them Grace by @elyse_fitz .

FOR THE SPIN BIKE

I could spend 30 minutes waking up slowly, or I could zombie walk myself to my spin bike and pick up a book I’ve already placed there to read. Read two pages, do 100 revolutions, repeat for 20 minutes. Not only am I wide awake, but brewing with new ideas. I like to stock intellectual books on interesting ideas like Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, or You Are The Girl For the Job by @jessaconnolly to get the inspirational juices flowing.

BEFORE BED

I’m too tired to learn anything at this point, so I keep fiction, memoir, or biographies at my bedside to read for a few minutes before crashing. I can only get through about 3 pages at a time of Confessions by St Augustine, but I’m really appreciating his reverent viewpoint and the fact that I can read something so old yet so piercingly relevant to my faith.

FOR THE CHECKOUT LINE

I also have books on Kindle when I’m in line places. My current read on Kindle is Love Thy Body by Nancy Pearcey. She confronts the separation of the mind and body and the modern day its implications; her writing is thought-provoking, makes me angry, cry, and nod my head yes all at the same time. It’s a roller coaster of emotion.

What’s your book reading strategy? Do you read one at a time or multiple?
